Patriotic Heroes Inspire Future Generations: Yu Clan Members Pay Tribute to Anti-Japanese Martyr General Yu Ziwu
On April 17, 2026, Yu Minfa, President of Fengcai Monthly, together with three vice presidents—Yu Haiying, Yu Guofu and Yu Yueru—and other staff members, a group of 12 people, drove for four hours to Shaoguan to make preparations for a clan fellowship event to be held the next day.
Upon arrival, despite the long and tiring journey, the group wasted no time in resting. Accompanied by Yu Lundao, the 80-year-old Supervisor of the Yu Jing Memorial Hall in Shaoguan, and clansman Yu Niudun, they went straight to the cemetery of General Yu Ziwu to pay their respects, cherish the memory of loyal souls, and honor their ancestors.
General Yu Ziwu: A Distinguished Anti-Japanese Martyr
Yu Ziwu (1901–1944), courtesy name Wenbo, was a native of Jidu Village, Wuwei, Baisha Town, Taishan City, Guangdong Province , and an outstanding anti-Japanese national hero of the Yu clan.
He studied at Beijing University of Political Science and Law and Tokyo University of Political Science and Law in Japan, and later graduated from the 20th Cavalry Program of the Imperial Japanese Army Academy. Returning to China in 1929, he renounced his scholarly career to join the army, serving successively as a staff officer, battalion commander, and regiment commander in the Guangdong Army.
After the full-scale outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, he led his troops in the Battle of Shanghai and the Breakout Battle of Nanjing , achieving remarkable victories. In 1943, he was appointed Major General Deputy Division Commander of the 151st Division, 62nd Army of the National Revolutionary Army, and received military training in India.
In 1944, he took part in the Changsha-Hengyang Campaign to reinforce the Defense of Hengyang. His troops fought fiercely against Japanese forces near Hengyang West Railway Station and Yumu Mountain. On the early morning of July 22, Yu Ziwu’s command post at Qili Mountain, Maanling on the outskirts of Hengyang was suddenly attacked by Japanese troops. He personally led his guards in close combat, was hit by several bullets, and sacrificed his life heroically at the age of 43.
In 2014, General Yu Ziwu was included in the first list of Famous Anti-Japanese Martyrs by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People's Republic of China, his loyalty and bravery forever recorded in history.
At the cemetery, the Yu clan members stood in solemn silence, presented fresh flowers, and recalled the general’s heroic deeds in defending the nation. They vowed to carry forward the Yu clan’s fine traditions of respecting ancestors, loving the country, and passing down loyalty and courage, expressing deep reverence and remembrance for the martyred hero.
